Stupa

Stupas, called "chorten" in Tibetan, began as reliquaries for the remains of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, in the 6th century B.C.E.  After the Buddha manifested death, his remains were cremated and divided in eight parts which were enshrined in eight great stupas.  The early stupas were little more than large mounds around which temples grew.  However, in the Tibetan tradition, a complicated sacred geometry evolved, creating a beautiful form for housing the remains of great masters and various relics.  Stupas in East Asia developed into tall buildings called "pagoda" in English.

Sky Heart Retreat Center just outside Dodgeville, WI has a nearly complete Tibetan style chorten.  Constructed with volunteer labor and donations under the direction of Drupon Thinley Ningpo, it will be a great source of merit for whoever contributes to it's construction or circumambulates it.
